Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Marketing, the Videographer & Multimedia Producer will be a key contributor to the university’s marketing and communications efforts.
This position will help create and manage multimedia marketing content – including impactful videos, photos, and digital assets – that help “tell the story of Wilfrid Laurier University,” build the Laurier brand and help the organization achieve its vision, mission, goals and objectives. We are looking for a creative, tech-savvy, hands-on videographer and editor who is collaborative, strategic, organized, and has excellent skills in project management, communications, and building relationships.
This role will be responsible for leading the entire process of creating multimedia content for the organization’s strategic marketing priorities – including managing pre-production, production, and post-production; working closely with other members of the Marketing team and campus partners. This position will develop and share processes, best practices and tools across the organization to educate, empower and elevate marketing capabilities.
In addition to working closely and collaboratively with colleagues in External Relations and partners across the university, they will also work with third-party vendors/agency partners/freelancers to develop partnerships in support of meeting the institution’s multimedia marketing needs. There is also opportunity to work with student employees and volunteers to develop and support marketing efforts.
The Videographer & Multimedia Producer has a university-wide mandate to support all campuses and locations. This position is based at the Waterloo campus.
Accountabilities
CONTENT STRATEGY:
The Videographer and Multimedia Producer plays a key role in developing and executing marketing-critical aspects of the university’s digital content strategy
In collaboration with the External Relations team, this role will suggest and coordinate creative and engaging visual content to help build marketing content calendars for marketing and advertising campaigns, institutional web properties and marketing landing pages, social media, and event needs to support university strategic objectives and communications needs
Identifies gaps and provides recommendations for visual assets to use for marketing and communications initiatives to meet project needs
Assists with developing creative briefs and technical requirements for new digital media plans and tactics
Helps define objectives and develop creative vision for key multimedia initiatives
Leads consultation and alignment on direction with appropriate stakeholders
Monitors environmental and industry activity to stay informed of trends and best practices to bring expertise and thought leadership to team members and projects
PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND OVERSIGHT:
Creates work plan and maps out deliverables, timelines, and required steps of implementation
Oversees execution with regular communication with team members/partners/stakeholders
Coordinates production plans including casting, styling, location scouting, props, logistics, facilities, permissions, etc.
VIDEO/PHOTO CREATION:
Creative development: Idea conceptualization, storyboards, designing and implementing digital, video, and animated materials
Manages set-up, planning and art direction for video and photo shoots, working closely with team members. Sets up and operates cameras, lighting, audio equipment, teleprompter, etc.
Leads interviews and captures speakers/speeches, b-roll, live events, etc.
Edits and retouches videos and photos to develop impactful finished materials
Ensures AODA compliance, and compliance to university governance/user requirements, including creation of closed captioning, titles, etc.
Ensures project deliverables meet all brief requirements, best practices, brand specifications and key messages; developing all necessary file output and formats
DIGITAL ASSET MANAGEMENT:
Manages a centralized digital asset management environment to store, organize, manage, archive and share assets (videos, footage, photos, etc.)
Creates, documents and shares processes to ensure assets are easy to locate, share, and repurpose
Responsible for managing current software/tools (including Extensis Portfolio, OneDrive, Sharepoint, Connect, etc.)
Will lead/support the evaluation and recommendation of future solutions to meet organizational needs
Recommends and manages processes, systems and user access; develops best practice resources, tools and process documentation to train and empower colleagues and new users
Maintains good working equipment and tools; researches and recommends new solutions for equipment, software, etc. as needed
Works closely with ICT and other partners as required to ensure assets are efficiently and safely archived, backed-up, and preserved
PROCESSES, TOOLS, AND RESOURCES:
Creates, maintains and shares reference and training documents, including workflow and instructional manuals to ensure knowledge transfer and training for others
Oversees the creation and maintenance of guidelines/standards, resources, templates and tools to help collaborators and stakeholders create, submit, review, provide feedback on and approve video and other digital content deliverables
PARTNER RELATIONSHIPS AND SUPPORT:
Supports development and maintenance of relationships with external agency partners, and potentially student/volunteer resources to support overall needs
Liaises with vendors to manage timelines, details and budgets
Reviews and maintains externally produced assets to ensure all materials reflect branding and visual identity guidelines
Qualifications
- Successful completion of a relevant post-secondary program in Digital Media, Video/Film/Media Production, Design, Marketing, Communications or related field.
- At least four years of relevant work experience in multimedia production, cinematography, multimedia communications, technology or a related field with a focus on digital communications.
- Current, relevant portfolio of videography required. Inclusion of photography an asset. Motion graphics, and animation also an asset.
- Professional experience in all levels of multimedia production, from storyboarding to filming, directing, coordinating production logistics, editing and post-production, and able to deftly manage feedback from multiple stakeholders along the way.
- Professional experience with video editing and animation using Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects. Ability to edit raw images (Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop).
- Experience with digital asset management tools, and best practices in cataloguing.
- Experience with various camera types, lighting and audio/sound equipment.
- Drone certification/license is an asset but not required.
- Experience working within brand guidelines and supporting the development of and meeting requirements from creative briefs.
- Knowledge of accessibility best practices, copyright, licensing, and experience in sourcing/managing music, etc.
- Brings passion, creativity and positivity to team and to all projects.
- Has a strong passion for videography, multimedia and digital and social advertising.
- Interest and understanding of best practices across digital/social landscape.
- Superior interpersonal skills and proven ability to work in a collaborative environment as a strong team member and contributor.
- Brings strong leadership skills to lead projects from start to finish, collaborating and consulting with colleagues and partners, and communicating with stakeholders as needed for input and alignment.
- Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders; campus partners; agency partners/vendors, and student staff/volunteers.
- Superior communication skills, including the ability to communicate with people at all levels of the organization, from a wide variety of backgrounds. Comfort in sharing expert opinion and bringing recommendations and rationale to influence projects.
- Strong project and time management skills with attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively under deadlines in a high-pressure, multi-tasking environment, with strong problem-solving and prioritizing skills.
- Strong work ethic, sense of urgency, and self-motivation, including the ability to follow through to complete tasks independently.
- Ability to train and/or mentor/coach colleagues and informally manage and engage a team of student photography and video contributors.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. of equipment and stand or sit for extended periods of time is required.
Hours of Work
This is a full-time continuing position. The normal hours of work are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, 35 hours per week. Flexibility in hours will be required to work evenings and/or weekends. Adequate notice will be provided to adjust hours.
Compensation
Grade: SH-08
Rate of Pay: $34.86 - $41.03
