Nature and Scope of Work

The manager, marketing leads the development and delivery of Capilano University's marketing products, services and strategy. This strategic role brings together the management of traditional and digital marketing, to create engaging marketing materials and a dynamic online user experience for local, national and international audiences.

Reporting to the director, communications & marketing, and overseeing a team of marketing content specialists and graphic designers, the manager, marketing ("manager") serves as the senior marketing liaison to support student recruitment, retention and special projects. This role is highly collaborative and focused on growing awareness of the University through best practices in online and traditional marketing.

The role serves as the project manager for the University's major advertising campaigns, and is a strong creative contributor in the marketing process.

The manager oversees a centralized website publishing group and leads the research, implementation measurement and analysis of key digital communications and marketing strategies. The manager regularly liaises with the other members of the communications & marketing team, as well as the University's deans, directors, and program managers. The manager works in close collaboration with the University's Information Technology department to ensure that IT solutions and user experience considerations are well-integrated and the marketing priorities of the University are fully realized. Supporting student recruitment through the collaborative design of sophisticated marketing products and services is a priority for this role.

The manager oversees the work of third party service providers engaged to support its marketing efforts, and operates with an unwavering commitment to the University's brand standards and their dynamic application across all channels.

Key Responsibilities

Marketing:

Researches, develops, implements and evaluates the University's strategic marketing initiatives.

Performs as the lead marketing copywriter and advisor; experienced in mentoring others in all aspects of marketing content creation.

Oversees all aspects of marketing collateral creation produced by other members of the team.

Supports special event marketing with promotional content and collateral.

Explores creative ideas and new approaches to marketing through a consultative process.

Leads through all stages of marketing campaigns for the University from concept through realization to evaluation.

Partners with student recruitment to ensure recruitment activities are supported with effective and engaging marketing collateral materials.

Leads focus groups, user research, usability goals, measures, and testing for online initiatives.

Partners with IT and digital content specialists to develop information architecture: site structure, navigation and information design for the University's web site that supports the University's marketing and recruitment objectives.

Develops budget recommendations for marketing initiatives and oversees marketing spending.

Researches, prepares and delivers presentations on various marketing initiatives.

Implements and leads best practices in digital channel and content management including refining web architecture to highlight most active pages and content.

Management communications:

Represents and acts for the director of communications & marketing when requested.

Produces communications on behalf of the director, when needed.

Acts consistently as a conscientious champion of the University's brand identity and ensures its appropriate application in marketing communications.

Chairs the University's Marketing Council.

Provides emergency publishing service to the web, as needed.

Personnel management and department support:

Demonstrates exemplary leadership in all aspects of personnel management.

Plans, schedules, directs, evaluates and supervises the work of marketing and visual content specialists.

Reviews and recommends marketing procedures to support efficient workflow planning for the marketing content team.

Researches and liaises with outside contractors including evaluating proposals, managing short-term hires and awarding contracts for marketing projects.

Participates as a key advisor on digital communications and marketing in the department's budget planning process.

Liaises between departments and marketing specialists.

Other duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Proven experience in digital strategy development, project management and coordination.

Advanced knowledge of current and emerging digital communications technologies.

Superior written, verbal and interpersonal communications skills.

Proven management and administrative skills in a unionized environment.

Demonstrated ability to plan, schedule, direct and evaluate employees.

Experienced in budget planning and management.

Ability to work well under pressure, manage competing priorities and effectively meet deadlines.

Skilled in developing and placing advertising content in traditional and social media.

Accomplished in digital display, SEM, e-marketing, mobile and engagement strategies.

Advanced knowledge of social media platforms, including social media advertising and ability to leverage them to support strategic marketing and communications goals.

Strong project management skills in working collaboratively and independently on complex projects with multiple stakeholders.

Working knowledge of HTML, CSS, Javascript, Flash, Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Fireworks or equivalent.

Management level experience working with enterprise-level CMS.

Mastery in working with Google Analytics and other web metrics tools.

Solid understanding of visual design aesthetics, graphic standards and print production supervision.

Strong customer service and commitment to quality while serving multiple projects simultaneously.

Addressing time-sensitive and critical tasks with dependability, due care and attention at all times.



Required Qualifications & Experience

Minimum of a four-year undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline such as marketing, digital media, e-business, interactive design, information systems, communications or a related field.

5 years demonstrated experience in website management/mastery, digital strategy, campaigns and online marketing for a complex, largescale institution. Post-secondary environment is preferred.

Experience managing or supervising staff, preferably in a unionized environment.

Professional development in the areas of marketing, digital strategy, user experience, and/or online metrics.


Required Licenses, Certificates & Registration

Project Management Certification (PMP) or equivalent combination of training/experience is required
