A day in the life of an R&D manager
Good morning! You have started your day even before you arrive
at the office where overnight your inbox has filled with updates
from your global network, new challenges and the inevitable
rework of your schedule. Your brain churns but no time to dwell
as you have project briefings and reviews, a new fabric, a new
construction process and several new product technologies,
each converging towards an exciting completion. Your cycle to
work has brought you the time to mentally re-map your day and
solve the elusive engineering problem that has been quietly
bubbling at the back of your mind. As soon as you arrive in the
office, the task list is updated and distributed to your project
teams, you all dive into the workshop, and with a quick tweak
here and there that amazing new technology takes an important
step towards commercialization. You head up to your desk to
check in with the rest of the Whitespace team and enroll them in
elevating your analysis of the latest product report…it’s not
ready yet! Clearly a new method needs to be developed and a
consensus forms towards setting a new bar, so together you
rally the troops and plan how to drive towards it. You then turn
your attention to the product feedback stream and then you’re off
into the “ field” either in the beautiful Vancouver outdoors or
perhaps a little farther afield. Don’t forget to have some lunch.
On your return the pleasant distraction of a ringing phone calls
you into a meeting to explain how sweating really works. By the
time 5:30 rolls around, you’ve hit a target, set a goal and the
flywheel is spinning just that little bit smoother and faster, for
now.
