On the hunt with: Monica Chang

This week, we debut On The Hunt – a new series where we interview potential job-seekers (whether out-of-work or transitioning) and talk to them about what the challenges have been, what their goals are, as well as any advice or tips they may have for other job seekers to stay motivated. This week, writer Jennie Lovan talks to job hunter Monica Chang.

I watch as Monica Chang adjusts herself in her seat. She is accompanied by her shih tzu, Toby, who impressively jumps into her lap, and joins us on our skype conversation. Like many people out there, Monica is keeping herself busy through various jobs while searching for that job she can call her career. I had the pleasure of sitting down with her and having a virtual chat about her hunt for the “dream job.”

Job-wise, what are you up to right now?

I’m currently an Inside Sales Specialist for Coca-Cola. I work in a call center environment, but I often work remotely. I love the flexibility of being able to work from home. My job entails calling existing customers and answering customer calls to help with their orders and answer any other inquiries. I deal with customers all across Canada. I have been working there for five years now.

What is your dream job?

My dream job is to become an entrepreneur and open up my own dog cafe. I love the idea of people being able to enjoy the company of dogs while enjoying their coffee and snacks. I want to create the perfect space for the coffee-drinking-dog-lover.

What skills or knowledge can you transfer from your current job to your dream job?

The customer service aspect of my job will definitely benefit me in running a dog cafe. I have learnt to deal with challenging client situations on the spot. This job has given me the skill to problem-solve on my toes and interact with customers effectively.

What actions have you taken to achieve your dream job?

I went to Sheridan College in Brampton, Ontario to gain a business diploma back in 2008. I am at Seneca College right now completing a marketing diploma to further my knowledge in business. Last year I went to Korea where dog cafes are very popular. The language barrier made it a little difficult, but I tried my best to discuss the ins and outs of running a unique business like that. I plan on visiting more dog cafes and learning about how they got their businesses off the ground.

What is the most difficult part about your hunt?

My job hunt is a little different from everyone else’s in the sense that I’m not just marketing myself, I am marketing a business plan. The hardest part is trying to find investors to invest in the idea of a dog cafe. There are many health and food regulations that don’t align with the business, and that tends to scare investors off.

What advice would you give someone pursuing the same dream?

Don’t give up. If owning your own business is your dream, do whatever it takes to learn everything about that business. If you want to open up a cupcake shop, or start a fashion company, do everything you can to learn about cupcakes and fashion. Your knowledge of the topic needs to match your passion. Also, network, network, network. Find other people that share the same passion for that topic. They will be your greatest resources.
